Origins
Toto's early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the first half, Toto produced products to meet the demands for modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products from other manufacturers in order to complement its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for water-related household appliances. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve its customers and increase profit. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent in the toilet technology. Its latest toilet has an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water for its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than conventional models.

Discography
With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The band began as a four-piece and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its problems. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to give it. Toto was able achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distortion AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes took a turn towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than previously recorded performances.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed a few months later, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The group, which was missing Howe who was occupied with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
