What is Pragmatics?
A person who understands pragmatics can politely evade an issue, read between the lines, or even negotiate the rules of turn-taking in conversation. Pragmatics takes cultural, social, and situational factors into consideration when using language.
Consider this example: The news report states that a stolen photo was discovered "by an unidentified branch." Our understanding of pragmatics can help us in determining the truth and improve our daily communication.
Definition
Pragmatic is a term that describes people who are pragmatic and sensible. People who are pragmatic are focused on what actually works in the real world, and aren't entangled in idealistic theories that might not be applicable in reality.
The word"pragmatic" comes from Latin Praegere which translates to "to grasp." Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition that holds that understanding the world and agency are interdependent. It also views knowledge as a product of experience, and focuses on the way that knowledge is applied.
William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a new name for some old ways of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New Name for Old Methods of Thinkin'" was an answer to this. The lecture began by identifying a fundamental and seemingly intractable conflict between two ways of thinking about the hard-headed empiricist dedication to experience and relying on facts, and the gentle preference of a priori principle that appeals to rationalization. He proclaimed that pragmatism could bridge this gap.
He defined 'praxy, as a concept or truth that is not rooted in an idealized theory but in the present world. He believed that pragmatism was the most true and natural way of approaching human issues, and that any other philosophical approach was flawed in one way or another.
Other philosophers who formulated pragmatist views in the early 1900s were George Herbert Mead and W.E.B Du Bois, who developed pragmatic perspectives on social science and the study of race relations; Alain Locke, who came up with pragmatist theories about the structure of science and education and John Dewey, who articulated pragmatic ideas in the areas of public policy education, democracy, and the public sector.
Presently, pragmatism is influencing the design of educational programs, curriculums and other applications of science and technology. Additionally, there are several pragmatic philosophical movements, such as classical pragmatism and neopragmatism. There are also formal and computational pragmatics; theoretical, game-theoretic clinical, experimental and neuropragmatics; and intercultural and interlinguistic pragmatics among others.
Examples
Pragmatics is a branch of philosophy and the study of language that focuses on speakers' communicative intentions, the context in which these utterances are enacted, and how hearers interpret and comprehend the meaning behind these words. As such pragmatics is distinct from semantics in that it focuses on meaning in a context or social sense, not the literal truth-conditional meaning that words convey. In this sense it is often referred to as a pragmatic theory. However despite its focus on social meaning, it's also been criticised for not considering truth-conditional theories.
One common example of pragmatism is when someone takes a realistic view of their situation and chooses a course of action that is more likely to work than pursuing an idealistic idea of how things should be. For instance, if you are trying to save wildlife, it is more likely to succeed if you adopt an approach that is practical and works out a deal with poachers instead of fighting them in court.

This is the sort of thing that people are taught to do through practising their social skills. Pragmatics also involves understanding the meaning behind what's not said. Silence can convey a lot depending on the context.
Difficulties with pragmatics can make it difficult for an individual to use appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication in a social context. This can result in problems at the workplace, at school and in other activities. People with difficulties with their pragmatics might have difficulty greeting others and introducing themselves, sharing personal information, navigating social norms and laughing or using humor, as well as understanding implied language.
Teachers and parents can assist children to develop their pragmatism by modeling social behavior, engaging them in role-playing activities that cover a variety of social scenarios and providing constructive feedback about their communication efforts. Origins
The term pragmatic originated in the United States around 1870. It was embraced by American philosophers and the public due to its close association with modern natural and social sciences. He is also believed to be the first to develop a theory based on empirical evidence. In his book "The Present Dilemma in Philosophy', published in 1907, the author outlined a fundamental conflict in the field of philosophy. The dichotomy he outlines is the conflict between two approaches to thinking: one that is based on an empiricist commitment to experiences and relying on the facts, and the other, which is based on principles of a priori that appeal to the concept of ratiocination. He predicted that pragmatism would provide a bridge between these competing styles.
James believes that the truth of something only exists when it works. His metaphysics leaves the possibility open that there could be beyond the realm of our comprehension. He acknowledges, too, that pragmatism doesn't reject the religion of its fundamentals. Religions can be valid for those who believe in them.
A key figure amongst the classical pragmatists was John Dewey (1859 to 1952). John Dewey (1859-1952) is known for his contributions to many different fields of philosophical inquiry, including ethics, social theory and the philosophy of education. He also contributed significantly to aesthetics, law, and philosophy of religion. In the final years of his career the philosopher began to think of pragmatism in terms of the philosophy of democracy.
Recent pragmatists have developed new areas of study including computational pragmatics (the research of computer systems which use context to better understand the intentions of their users) games-theoretical and experimental pragmatics, as well as neuropragmatics. These areas of pragmatics aid to gain a better understanding of how information and language are used.

These philosophers have attempted to restore the ideal of objectivity in classical pragmatism.
