The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could understand the words. However, many of the words were being replaced by foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the first half, Toto manufactured products to meet the growing demand for modern, new urban housing. It had the first tunnel kilns in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s in order to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve its customers and boost profits. The company adopted a just-in-time method of managing supply chains, and it used the same method for its sales process. This led to a higher degree of customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate on the toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example, has a strong tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water for its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than conventional models.
The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits on Toto's most iconic products and their development as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products such as bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even has a bathroom that features the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group performed sessions with various musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock band. The group began as a quartet, and they released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without issues. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that's a smash or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Toto was able to achieve this through the aid of the smash hit "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.
The album begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also includes some jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and sounds totally wrong, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Steve Lukather has forged a vibrant, intimate friendship with Joe Williams that is flourishing professionally all over the world. In 2018, the duo celebrated their 40 Tours Around The Sun with a hugely successful tour around the world. The album that bears the same name was ranked #5 on Billboard 200. The band's newest tour features their most popular hits and rarely-performed live deep cuts and some songs that come from Lukather's and Williams catalogs.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than on previous performances.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the band embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to feature one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By Full Statement , Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
